Fatigue Set In

Hello my Trusted Followers,

I must apologize for our lack of blogging yesterday, that seems like it was more that just 24 hours ago...what a long day today!

This morning we started out by getting up before the roosters and we all went to Church on the Rock for a church service put on my Pastor Gary.  He was very good as always!!  After church we went to Grace Village for a tour which was pretty cool to see changes still being made.  I got an opportunity to check on my AED's and all 3 are still in good working shape, thank God!!  After our tour at GV, we went to go visit with some of the elders in the elder care program that HH has.  Our first stop was with the one and only Marie (105 years old)!!  She is such a Godly woman who never complains and is always happy to see people come visit her.  She said she prays for more people to stop by and visit her...her prayers get answered a lot :)  We continued on and got to visit with 3 of the 5 we had planned.  The other two were not at home.  We sang songs for them, washed their feet and put lotion on them.  They really seemed to enjoy it, as did we.

After this we went right over to Isaiah's Orphanage and played with those kids.  We brought some finger nail polish for the girls and a soccer ball for the boys.  Keith, Colleen, Kathy and I had our nails painted and it was a lot of fun!!

We came home for the orphanage, loaded up 14 of the neighborhood boys into the Top Top and then we took off with Hanna too to Pizza Amoure,  The kids were so quiet on our way there.  We had a very delicious dinner.  The kids started to wake up towards the end and when we got back into the top top, the kids went nuts!! Yelling and singing and praising God.  They did this on their own accord and they were loud deciples of Christ.  This was a very tiresome day for all of us and everyone else is in bed while I type this.  You know how many times I have nodded off while writing this...sorry in advance for mispelling.  I had a great day with all aspects of our trip today.  We definately had fun with the the seniors and the youth of Haiti today.  Tomorrow is another day and a gift from God.  I am so tired right now!!

Good Night from Haiti,

Day 3 - Sick kids and oozing wounds :)

Hello from Haiti,

I think this is a conspiracy, my team voted to have me be the team blogger...say what??  I would like all of my family and friends to know how today was along with all of my teams family and friends and all of you HH Alum...Ke Bondye Beni'ou!!

Today was a very interesting day, we went to General Hospital in Port au Prince and visited with some very sick kids in their pediatric unit.  We stopped on our way to grab some water pouches and some snacks at the store.  We divided up the snacks in the top top which was kind of funny bouncing down the unpaved rock filled roads dodging other cars and trucks and people...you know all of you back in the states want some of that!!

Once we got to General Hospital we handed out our treats to the parents of these very sick little babies and then our team went into nurturing mode, one baby after another baby got picked up, held gently, rocked back and forth...and then there was me: My first baby I picked up screamed and screamed and so I put her down pretty quick and decided it was best to admire them from a distance and I actually really liked seeing all of my teammates interact with the kids and I was in awe at how those kids liked them and not me...I mean really? My peeps were so good with them though!! Jeff and Emmanuel hit up the guitar and began to sing and it wasn't long before they had the parents joining in which was awesome too...I also tried to sing and no babies cried during this for any of you who might think differently :)

After our time at the Hospital, we headed back to base camp (our guest house) and regrouped and had a layover before heading out to our next activities.  Our team split up and 3 of us went to Gertrudes Orphanage and the other 3 went to the home for sick children.  We (this is for Renee) (Colleen, Kathy and myself) were supposed to all help out at the wound clinic but the staff said that they only had room for 2 of us to go.  We rock paper scissored over it and Kathy lost, just kidding she didn't loose, she volunteered to stay behind and help out with the sick babies.  Colleen and I went to the wound clinic and we had no clue what to expect.  We were handed supplies and told to go to work.  There was over 30 people with injuries that needed attention waiting for us to start.  Every wound we seen was in pretty bad shape, some were full of gangrene, others full of infection and all of them were large and very painful looking.  What we didn't hear was any complaining about how much we hurt them.  They were all very thankful and pleasant but wow what an ordeal.  It was set up like a MASH station.  Very primitive ways in which to care for these wounds with basic first aid.  All of the pt's could use much more intensive treatments but none are available for many of them which is pretty sad.

We got brought back to the home for sick kids and found Kathy, she said she held many kids, fed many of them, helped change diapers and assisted the staff with other needs, she really enjoyed her time there too!! We had no ride come for us and a staff member got worried and had a gentleman walk us home...it was a great walk through the back channels of the neighborhood but it was a long walk the way they took.  Finally we got reunited and heard the other 3 had a blast singing and playing with the special needs kids at Gertrudes!! Jeff is finally feeling 100% and had a lot of fun singing everywhere we went and we enjoyed hearing him.  He is a very talented musician and he is a great leader for us!!

Have a good night all,

Matt Johnson

Day 2 - Water Truck

Good evening from Haiti,

I guess the energy draining day we had today left the rest of my team zapped to blog, so you get me again :)  We had a very good breakfast which gave us just enough energy to get through this emotionally and physically draining day!  We ventured off to Cite Soleil for our first water truck stop and it was very exciting to see all of the children and their sweet faces greet us when we came to a stop!  Their smiles were infectious, their laughter was musical to our ears, their hugs were so pure and so warm.  I got mobbed as did all of my team by the throngs of little ones everywhere, it was awesome!!  God put us there to see how they live, to give them life water and to love them up with the love that God put in and on our hearts.  It really was sad to see their living conditions, sad to see the raw sewage flowing down the street, sad to see the barefoot kiddos running and walking on broken glass and rusty cans...so sad that it broke our hearts!! We got to hold the kids, play with the kids, deliver water and share God's love, Jezi Renmen Ou kids!!!

We went back to the water truck stop and wow what a back up of water trucks!! It was fun to get to see all of the different companies and the Fire Department with their 2 Fire Trucks!! I really enjoyed that as I work with Fire Fighters everyday and one of our teammates Kathy Messer's husband is a Fridley Fire Fighter...hey Todd!!  Once full again, we ventured off to a new stop for me, cement buildings, wide streets, longer distances for hauling water but the same adorable children who wanted our attention so bad that they fought with each other for it.  I love all of them wanting to climb on us and they all seemed to really enjoy Keith and me as we have the bigger stomachs...they say we're big and they ask if we have a baby inside...such sweet kids :)  I loved seeing the ladies on our team (Kathy, Renee and Colleen) with all of the little kids, they have magical abilities to put children to sleep...I do not!! It was neat to go down the street a ways and see a change in neighborhoods, big difference in housing structures seen.  We had a third water truck stop and this one was my favorite.  We worked harder, carried more water further distances, played with the kids between hauling more buckets and more buckets.  When we ran out of water, I was so happy!!!

We got to go to the warf after this stop and see a bunch of boats, a puffer fish, some fishermen, a man fixing nets and some kids playing in the ocean...pretty cool to see!!  I was pretty happy to get there and see the neat sights!  We came home and got to go swimming with some of the local neighborhood boys and wow that was refreshing!!!! We had a great dinner tonight followed by word of the day which got interrupted by pouring rain...guess what happened then??  Slip and Slide!!!!! Renee and I were the brave souls to go for a slide and man was that fun!!!!!  Anna Collins and Mandi Rae were my first teammates to try the Haitian slip and slide out last Sept and I had so much fun that I had to do it again...I know I am a giant kid but God loves that about me :)  Thank you Haiti for a wonderful day, Thank you God for providing this day to give us a glimpse into the daily lives of some of the Haitians, they have so little and never complain, we all could learn from that!!  Hey Lois Girgis Coyle, lovely Haitian Tulip right??

God Bless all of you,

Matt Johnson

Journey to Haiti Sept 22nd, 2014

Today was a very early start as many of you can relate! The alarm clock rang at 1:15 am...this is never a good time to wake up!! Late night packing, early rising, early run to the airport, got into the main area and found that no coffee shops are open before 4:30 am, this was tough to handle but we waited and eventually Caribou opened up and a good start to the day was starting to take place.  We had a good flight into Miami and met up with our 6th teammate Colleen.  She flew in from Pennsylvania this morning and met us in the nick of time in Miami.  We had a good second leg of our trip into Haiti!! We had a warm welcome from Maxime and Brunet.  Once at the guest house, we got to go on a fun neighborhood tour and we heard lovely ladies singing praises to Jesus and it was such a sweet sound!! We got back and had a great meal as they all are and then toured the property.  God hand picked each and every one of us to be on this trip and this being day 1 of 8, he is already showing Himself to us and He is revealing the heart of Haiti!! God doesn't want us to wonder, what can we do? God wants us to see what we can do and do it to glorify His name, well Haiti...here we come with 6 huge hearts, 12 hands and 12 feet, a strong desire to help and do what we can, determination, grit, compassion, love and God's word!!! My favorite bible passage in Haiti is Matthew 25: 31-46 where God talks about being hungry and feeding Him, being thirsty and giving Him something to drink, being naked and giving Him clothes, being a prisoner and going to visit Him in Jail...this passage is about being the Hands and Feet of Christ and making good decisions, ones that glorify God and that by doing for the least of these people you are doing for Christ...whoa!!! Powerful stuff, live life, love many, help regardless of what you can get out of it and really we should just love our neighbors as ourself!! Our neighbors are not just the ones right next door but also they are in Haiti, Germany, Australia, China, Canada...the world is our neighbor, how are you going to treat your neighbors? Haiti holds a special place in my heart and I am so grateful to be here.  God Bless you all...Ke Bondye Beni'ou!!!!

Love in Christ,

Grateful

Today was our last full day in Haiti. We began our Sunday basking in joyous worship at Grace Village Church in Titanye. Church here is nothing like I have seen before and I want more of it! Jeff and Lucina sang during church and everyone was mesmerized. It was hard to say goodbye to many of our new friends at Grace. There is so much love here.  We were hugging people we've only known for a few days like we hug our family before a long goodbye. They are now our family too.  I find myself desperate to know more about my new family and follow their lives after we leave. I can't fathom not knowing, and so I try not to think about it except to ask God to keep us connected.

After Grace we drove to the top of the mountain to take in God's beautiful creation and support the local economy by shopping. We were blessed to be able to bring Lucina, James, Dickinson, and Davidson with us for the day. Haiti is very beautiful, and it is very apparent from atop a mountain looking out. Seeing them experience this part of Haiti was special. Through this entire trip it was watching our Haitian friends live these experiences with us that was my favorite thing. I've learned so much from them.

Upon arriving back at the guest house both Healing Haiti teams and some of the neighborhood kids gathered to witness the very gifted Lucina and Jeff sing. Oh those voices!  They use their gift to bring joy to others and share their faith. For this many (including myself) are grateful.
One last trip to the pool at the Visa Lodge for a refreshing swim. Thank you Ashley for bringing an underwater camera so we could take ridiculous pictures.

We ended our day reflecting on our experiences in Haiti and our anticipation of what is to come when we arrive back home. What do we do now? What is God trying to tell us? I know one thing, we were called to be the change we wish to see in the world and it starts one person at a time.

God Was Smiling

Saturday - Beach Day with 22 kids from Grace Village, a beautiful young lady and an amazing Christian young man from Cite Soleil! We rented a 'tap tap' from town and ventured out to Mission Beach.  Two 'tap taps' filled with Minesotans and Hatians ... God was smiling!

The day was filled with sun, sand, the Caribbean blue, english/creole prayers, and much laughter.  We ended the afternoon with the angelic voice of the young lady singing the song our trip leader, Jeff wrote.  Again ... God was smiling!

After dropping off the kids we made a stop at The Mass Graves ... from a day of laughter - to a time of silence and honor as we listened to our driver, Emmanuel, tell his story.  He started with the exact date and time ... right down to the second - the day the earthquake devastated Haiti.  He said no one knew what was happening ... some thought it was Christ returning.  He thought it may be an earthquake so he knew he had to go out into the road and run - others ran into their homes - and the homes collapsed.  The graves hold 300,000 people according to the government ... more than 500,000 if you ask the people of Haiti.   Our hearts were still ... God's too.

A quick stop at 'home' and off to Pizza Amore - a restaurant run by Americans that came to Haiti to help.  Then back 'home' ... in the darkness ,,, even trickier to navigate these crazy roads.

Lord - thank you for your promise in 2 Corinthians 6:16 ... "I will live in them and walk among them.  I will be their God, and they will be my people.  Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord.  And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."  Bless the people of Haiti who love you and share their love with others.  Amen.

- Nancy

Full

Today was so full! We began our day at tent church at 6am. Tent church is held everyday for 4 hours in a huge metal pole barn. The place is filled with benches and chairs but the only people that stayed in their seats was us. Everyone walked around, singing and praising Jesus and praying for each other. The pastor is from Grace Village and was kind enough to conduct some of the service in English. He prayed over our trip and the change it would bring to our lives. The worship and gratitude that we saw was inspiring. The people here are poor in possessions but rich in the Spirit. The trust and gratitude they show Jesus is humbling and inspiring.

Next we headed up, up, up the mountain to Grace Village. It was market day and the streets were filled with people. We got our first glimpse of the ocean and it was so beautiful! Once we arrived we were given a tour of Grace Village. We saw the bread ovens, the children's classrooms, the Aquaponics farm, the new housing going up and the new medical and dental clinic. And of course the children! The lovely, funny, goofy, adorable children that call Grace home accompanied us on our tour in groups. Some stayed with us the whole visit while others would pop over to pull a pony tail then scamper off to join their friends. They stole all our hearts.

After leaving Grace we visited the homes of 4 elders in Healing Haiti's elder program. Our 2nd stop was to Marie's house who is 104 years old! She relaxed while we washed her feet, massaged her legs and hands and painted her nails. She relished the music-we had a full 3 piece band today!-and at the end of her visit said "tre kontan", very happy. We prayed over her before we left and I was struck by her strong faith. She's undoubtably led a hard life but is still praising God with a joy that is radiant.

After the elders we went to Juno's orphanage where we sang, played games and danced with the kids. We toured their humble building and saw where they have class, sleep, eat and play. While it was hard to see the children in such conditions they are obviously loved and there is a strong sense of community. We ended the day the way we began it-with songs of praise for our awesome God. As we prepared to leave Juno's the children put on a performance for us loudly proclaiming their love for Jesus.

We headed back to the guest house this day tired but full-full of the praise, hope, faith and joy that we have witnessed in Haiti today. God is good!

Unexplainable Love

Writing this post a little late, I guess you could say I'm on "Haitian time."

Yesterday was one of my favorite days, water day. There's absolutely no way I can explain the feeling you get when pulling into the village hearing the children yell, "Hey You!" and stepping off the tap-tap into a flood of children waiting for you to hold them, love them, and cherish the time you have with them. The feeling of communicating through smiles, hand games, and dancing...or the feeling of wanting to do everything you possibly can to help whether it be holding the water hose, dancing with the children, helping someone lift that heavy bucket of water onto their head so they can bring it to their home, or stepping in and carrying that bucket of water, even when it's almost too heavy to manage. It's amazing the strength that God can give us whether it be physically, mentally, or even emotionally.

We also visited ApParent Project; a place where Haitian parents who are at risk of giving their children to an orphanage, due to a low economic status, are employed. Apparent project offers both employment as well as daycare for the children to keep families together. Each employee has different talents from mixing clay for pottery to making beads from cereal boxes. They put these talents together to create beautiful art pieces available for purchase.

Haiti is more than I could have ever imagined. It is so incredibly beautiful. As are the people. The love I have felt the past few days is one I've never felt before. When that child presses his or her cheek against yours and wraps their arms around you, it melts your heart. Even with the team, we have all been blessed with an unbelievable team who shows their love for one another. The week is moving by too quickly, I'm not ready for it to end.

Ashley Levang

Gertrude's and General Hospital

Today was a day of conflicting emotions. This morning our team went to Gertrude's Orphanage for special needs children.  What a gift to sing and play with the children and hold the babies!  The pure joy clearly shining in their eyes and beaming from their smiles is such a blessing to us!

This afternoon we went to General Hospital to visit the patients in the children's ward.  General Hospital is the only free hospital in the area where parents can bring their sick child to the doctor.  To be faced with the unbearable reality that your child will suffer or die because you do not have the means or resources to helps him or her is heartbreaking.

Our team came with donation packs filled will a clothing item for the baby, formula, baby bottles, wipes, soap, toothbrushes and a protein source, like tuna, for mom.  More importantly, we came with the love of Christ to share with those there.

Matthew14:14...he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

Kisses From Haiti

Last night I was reading Kisses from Katie by Katie Davis (which I highly recommend, by the way). She said that God never gives you more than you can handle.

"Because in these times, He shows Himself victorious. He reminds me that all of this life requires more of Him and less of me. God does give us more than we can handle. No maliciously, but intentionally, in love, that His glory may be displayed, that we may have no doubt of who is in control, that people may see His grace and faithfulness shining through our lives."

I thought about what I read before heading out on the water truck. Having experienced this twice already, I know that God always shows up and gives us strength to love and serve in ways that seem impossible. Well, He did just that today-in so many ways.

Between water truck stops we always take a break while the truck refills. I got off the tap tap to find a place in the shade and noticed a mama goat was giving birth. I quickly realized this mama was in great distress. Two babies were on the way out, but were stuck. One was head first and one was butt first. There were a lot of people standing around, but no one really knew what to do. I grabbed some gloves from the first aid kit and got to work. I was able to pull the first goat out by the head, but it was lifeless. The second one came easier, but was struggling. Then mama surprised us with yet another baby. The third delivered fine and within minutes was trying to take its first steps.

What I thought was a hopeless situation turned out to be another way that God showed up and did the impossible.

And that was just the animals. Our entire team shared other ways that God allowed us to do more than we could handle. Picking up sick babies laying alone on dirt floors, carrying heavy water buckets until our arms burned, and learning of bodies discarded in a garbage dump that these beautiful people call home are just a few examples. But somehow as we surrendered those horrifying situations to Him, He showed up and did the impossible. And we were filled with joy-more than we can handle.

Beautiful Haiti

We made it to Haiti! We had some delays in Miami because of storms but we made it and are so excited to serve God this week. What a great team this is! I can't wait to get to know each one and see how God works in their life. We had a long day and are off to bed. Tomorrow is water truck day!

Sun July 20th - We leave tomorrow!

The time is very near!
After much prep time, talk time, prayer, and packing this amazing team is ready to go!  So excited to see what God teaches each of us this week as we embark on a journey He has created for us.

I am so proud of the team we have. These servant hearts who have taken great interest in preparing, securing donations, and already going above and beyond what it takes to serve our Haitian brothers and sisters.

Thank you to each person who supported this team with your resources, donations, love, and prayer up to this moment.
We humbly ask for your prayer for our teams' health throughout this week so we can serve to our greatest capacity, this includes keeping us free of the nasty mosquitoes carrying Chikengunya as well.

Also please pray for our timely travel to and from Haiti and that Gods great protection will surround us our entire journey.
-Jeff

"Do not be afraid to be different from other people. The path I have called you to travel is exquisitely right for you. The more closely you follow My leading, the more fully I can develop your gifts. To follow Me wholeheartedly, you must relinquish your desire to please other people. However, your closeness to Me will bless others by enabling you to shine brightly in this dark world."
